Why People Choose Yoga

It can be ultimately frustrating when the new and inquisitive come to our classes for reasons that do not conform with our understanding, teaching and passion for the practice.  It is inevitable in 2014 that weight loss and conditioning are the initial aesthetic motivators that inspire women in particular to take up any physical activity. As Yoga has dramatically grown in popularity over the past 14 years it is not surprising that with, media attention and instant accessibility, the volume of footfall into all types of classes is on the up. It is also no wonder that the principles of traditional Yoga will become diluted as the number of instructors and types of yoga classes increase.

They Won’t Change So You Might Have To

It is highly unlikely that things will change and the popularity of Yoga will revert to pre 2000 levels so it may be worth considering a fresh approach to those who enter our classes blind to the amazing benefits of Yoga but looking for a level of instruction that matches their previous experience of group exercise.

Top Tips To Help You Up –Skill Your Teaching

1. Speak in a language that everyone understands

The Sanskrit terminology endemic in Yoga can initially alienate those who do not understand. Substantiate all information with a translation ad an explanation, even better if it relates to their anatomy and can help with their performance of the postures.

2. Talk to the class rather than at them

Constant talking is not pleasant to hear or understand, When we talk constantly a massive percentage of what we say is lost, our audience switches off making your words white noise rather then invaluable information

3. Make all instruction relevant

To each posture, it is not necessary to talk them in and out of each movement

4. Never teach a posture from the hand/arm position

The axis of all good movement is the pelvis and spine. The limbs simply fall into place when the torso is correctly positioned.

5. Avoid repetitive posture cues

No one has ever permanently improved their posture as a result of words

6. Avoid vague and irrelevant cues

Such as pull abs in, engage your muscles, switch on your core. These are not acceptable terms of instruction

7. Be purposeful, mindful and direct

In your instruction

We are much more likely to educate new class members on the amazing things that Yoga has to offer if  they love and respect our ability to teach them. After all they are as precious as our information.
