Newsletter January 2010

We wish you all the very best for the Year 2010, may this year bring you lots of success, happiness and most importantly good health.

With a tough winter setting upon us, we can all do with additional relaxation and sound sleep. Here are a few Yoga tips towards it:

1- Examine your diet and activities: cut down on coffee and caffeine drinks after 2pm and avoid TV, computers and work after 9pm

2- Establish a bed time ritual: choose calming activities after 9.pm. Once ready for bed, practice the following exercises 20-30mins before bed time aiming to be in bed by 10pm.

3- Relaxation Exercises:

  • First Practice a forward bend postures such as the Childs Pose, or variation: kneeling facing bed and resting head on forearms with forearms on the bed. Focus on observing the breathing, the movement of the body, the movement in back of the rib cage for 3 mins.
  • Then Sit cross-legged supported against the bed or wall and practice 5mins of breathing inhaling to 3/4 and exhaling to 6/8
  • Finally move to Bed and practice Yoga Nidra relaxation moving from Feet to Scalp. Mentally feel each body part becoming heavy and release any tension with intent.
  •
  • If you are still not asleep, continue to focus on your breathing as this deep relaxation state will engage the parasympathetic nervous system and provide some rest.

During the workshop you will learn to use a few Yoga classic postures to build sequences that are appropriate for the time of day and your needs when you choose to practice at home.

This workshop is open to beginners and intermediate students, an ideal way to kick start your Yoga practice in 2010.

The aim is to perfect the coordination of the breathing with Yoga Flow movements, the techniques of the Sun salutations and main Standing postures and the art of sequencing Yoga routines to enable the workshop participant to engage with their own Yoga practice at Home.

Basic Yoga sequences will be given to the students as part of the workshop for their home practice.
