Description

Ashtanga Workshop

“99% practice, 1% theory.” Pattabhi Jois

An exploration of the Ashtanga dynamic primary series with a little detour in the second series where we are going to explore some of the invigorating back bends it has on offer. Whether back bending is in your blood or not,  you will be able to find something to suit your needs and experience, with a range of modifications offered for each of the divine back bending asanas.

Objectives

Back bending brings energy to our being,  stimulating our nervous system in a positive way. We will build up to each back bending pose, allowing time for mindful practice and reflection along the way.

Building strength is one of the first thing we should be focusing on in our Yoga practice. It should be emphasised that Strength building is essential on the path to safe and deep stretching resulting in balance between flexibility, space and strength in our practice. The strength and fire we build up during and Ashtanga type practice allows us to start transformation in our bodies and eventually achieve the balance we all seek.

The arm balancing workshop was my first class at Yogamoo, everyone seemed very excited to take part in a two and a half hour workshop taught by guest teacher Lisa-Marie Bertoni. The class followed the Ashtanga primary series with ‘deviations’ to several fun arm balances. Often in a 1 hour class there is not enough time to focus on arm balances so it was nice to be able to explore them; trying new ones and improving on ones previously tried. Lisa-Marie gave very clear instructions on how to build up into some of the more complex positions, offering alternative options if you were not able to complete the full posture. I was worried I would tire and not be able to complete the full 2 and a half hour class but because of the pace and well thought out exercises I was able to attempt them all, feeling a great sense of achievement by the end of the class. My thanks to Laurence and Lisa-Marie for giving us the opportunity to focus on a difficult but important part of the yoga practice.

The workshop was great to improve technique and progress further with challenging arm balances. I’d recommend for anyone who is ready to tackle arm balances but prefers guidance before trying at home! Lisa broke down the postures into achievable segments, and was careful to ensure that we understood how to tackle the balances. She illustrated good and bad posture so that we could see and feel the difference. The session kept a fast pace but with options to lessen the challenge as needed.

A thoroughly enjoyable workshop introducing us to the Ashtanga Primary Series (with a few variations!). Lisa was a friendly and approachable teacher whose instructions were clear and easy to follow. Lisa gave options and modifications, and the more complex asanas were broken down into manageable stages so that everybody could achieve them to some extent. Physically it was a strong workshop, but everybody was encouraged to work to their own ability, although simultaneously being encouraged to take on a little extra challenge. A motivational workshop for us all I think!

An amazing afternoon of ashtanga yoga. Challenging but in no way intimidating. Lisa is fantastic at guiding you into more advanced poses with modifications for all levels. By the end I had surprised myself with strength I didn’t know I had and felt inspired to keep practising!
