We’re all guilty of spending too much time on social media. Checking Instagram while we wait in line, surfing Facebook in bed, tweeting our every thought, sometimes it’s hard to pull ourselves away!

All this screen time can take away from your yoga practice in some obvious ways.

You’re starting at a screen when you could be stretching!

You start to compare yourself to your friends. Every time someone checks in at the gym, you start to feel guilty about being on the couch.

Multitasking (which most of us are while on social media) can be stressful, and we don’t need to be reminded that stress is bad for us.

But, there’s good news for the social media addicted yogis and beginners too. Social media is actually becoming an incredibly helpful tool to get started with yoga, and to keep motivated, here’s how:

1. Connect with the local yoga studios in your area via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

They will usually post the daily schedule, a nice reminder and motivator to get yourself to class. Sometimes, they even advertise discounts and competitions to win free classes, and who doesn’t love free yoga!

2. Follow the big names in yoga. That includes individuals, magazines, and yoga clothing companies.

Try and fill your newsfeed with all the latest yoga news, pictures, and products. Hopefully you’ll find that all the time spent reading about yoga will encourage you to shut down your computer and roll out your mat.

3. Join a yoga challenge on Instagram.

There are so many inspiring yogis on Instagram, and they sometimes join forces to create yoga challenges. Typically, they will chose a pose each day that you photograph yourself doing, and post with the challenge hashtag. You can even win some great prizes! Look for these hashtags to get involved: #yogaeverydamnday #yogaAday #SpringIntoYoga #maytheforcebewithyogis #yogachallenge2014

4. One word: YouTube.

All you need to do is type in the word “yoga” and millions of class videos for all levels will come up. Now, you can’t use the excuse that you don’t have time to go to the studio, yoga comes to you!

5. Start a blog about your yoga journey.

Write about your adventures with yoga, the latest pose you conquered, or a great class you took. Having a place that you keep a running dialog will hold you accountable for keeping up with your practice, and hopefully inspire others to do the same!

6. Keep track of keywords of twitter.

Search for yoga near you and see what’s going on in the community. If you live in a big city, you can find some really great events happening, and connect with the local yogis. Recently, Lululemon brought free classes to studios across London with their “Cheeky Yoga Class” campaign. Yogis all over the city enjoyed complementary lunch time classes!

Remember, social media has the power to bring people together, share ideas, and create community, both online and off. Take control of your social media addition and let if fuel your yoga addiction!
