1. Pick Wisely
When selecting the perfect place for your yoga sanctuary you should consider a few things. Will you able to find some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the house? Can you open a window or door to let some fresh air and natural light into the room? You might even like to set up your yoga space outside in a summer house or covered patio area. Think about how the space makes you feel and see the potential for your beautiful new yoga haven!

2. Embrace The Space
Whether your room is small or sprawling, you’ll want to keep it clutter free. A clean and tidy zone is essential in setting the right ambience for your practice. Especially as beginner to meditation and yoga, it is important to “switch off” from any unnecessary background interruptions that might be competing for your attention. Creating a physical sense of space will ultimately allow your mind and body to fully relax. Helping you to let go of your day and dedicate this time to only you and your practice.

3. Let Nature In
Adding one or two simple indoor plants will bring many wonderful and natural health benefits to your space. By releasing oxygen into the environment, house plants will assist in easier and more effective breathing – A real bonus for us yogis! They will even clean your room, removing pollutants and significantly improving air quality. Adding a touch of the natural world to your space, be it plants, pebbles, shells or crystals, provides a calming and healthful addition to your sanctuary.

comfort-is-key

4. Comfort Is Key
Every tranquil space needs a comfortable area in which you can rest in peace. A chair, sofa or corner where you can pile up some large comfy cushions should do. Whatever you choose, make sure that it will support your body and head comfortably whilst you sit in a relaxed upright position. You might even like to add a meditation pillow to your space, for meditation and pranayama exercises. These are great additions to any sanctuary and will make for much more enjoyable and effective relaxation in your practice.

5. A Place With A Purpose
Making your yoga sanctuary fit for the purpose will create a functional and effective space for you to enjoy fully. This means having all your props to hand when you need them. Grab your yoga mat, towel, strap, blanket, blocks and bolster and set them out ready for your practice. The more inviting your space, the more motivated you will be to spend time in it!

6. Make It Your Own
With these tips please take what you like and leave behind the rest. A sanctuary should reflect your idea of what a yoga space should be. Surround yourself with things that will relax you and make you feel grounded within the environment. Sensory objects such as incense and candles are a great way to set the mood. Gentle music playing softly in the background is another a great addition. Choose colours you love but make sure that they are still calming and relaxing for your mind. Hang some beautiful curtains or maybe a wind chime and get creative.
