‘Saucha’ means cleanliness – and in the Yogic sense we’re talking about cleanliness of mind and body. Many of the packaged foods we buy from supermarkets are laden with artificial ingredients that effect our brains and bodies…. When we make our own foods with whole, natural ingredients though, we take control of our own health and wellbeing, and empower ourselves to be as happy and healthy as we should be naturally.

The ingredients in these cookies are natural and healthy, and the raw honey, ginger root and cinnamon also help give a helpful immune boost for the Autumn and Winter months. The oats in these cookies give long-lasting sustainable energy, while the tastes of pear, blackberries and apple sauce bring back memories of fruit crumble and apple pie.

Eating seasonal ingredients moves us closer towards living in harmony with nature, and when we do this, our bodies often respond positively by staying in good health. We very rarely do what we were naturally evolved to do these days; we walk on hard concrete pavements instead of allowing our feet to feel the real earth; we stay up until midnight when we would have originally slept as the sun sets; and we eat foods which contain ingredients we can’t pronounce! Tapping back into our natural rhythms just by including seasonal fruits and vegetables in our diets helps us respond to what our body really needs, and we move closer towards feeling our best selves.

So take your yoga practice in to the kitchen with you, and practice nourishing your mind and body….

Ingredients:

1 ¼ cups gluten-free oats
1 small pear (chopped into small pieces)
3 Tbsp organic apple sauce
1 Tbsp raw honey
1 tsp cinnamon
handful of pumpkin seeds
1 inch ginger root (chopped in to small pieces)
1 handful blackberries
a pinch of good quality salt (either pink Himalayan mountain salt, or natural sea salt)

How to:

Cookie3

Pre-heat your oven to 180C

Add your oats, chopped pear, apple sauce, honey, cinnamon, ginger root and blackberries to a large bowl and mix well until everything is combined.

Sprinkle in your pumpkin seeds and mix again.

Add the pinch of salt last, and mix again.

Using your hands (because it’s nice to really be a part of what we’re doing!) scoop out small balls of the mixture, and handle them until they’re firmly squashed together.

Flatten the balls on to a baking sheet (about 1 ½ cm thick)

Place the cookies in to the oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, turning them over half way through to ensure they’re cooked through on both sides.

The great thing about these ingredients is that you could really eat them all raw! So there’s no need to worry about under cooking them.

Take your cookies out of the oven and leave to cool on a baking rack or plate (or try one while it’s still warm….

They’re always best warm, aren’t they?)

Share with everyone who will inevitably want one!
